There’s so much content out there now that it’s hard to know how you can stand out amongst the noise.
But you can.
You have a mix of skills and knowledge that no one else has. By using that to your advantage you can create unique content that attracts more attention. Here’s how…
Take inspiration from your experiences
What have you done that not many people have?
For example, I recently wrote a blog post called “What I learnt from writing 3000 blog posts“.
Sure, this isn’t an entirely unique experience – there will be other people that have written a similar amount of content, but they’ll still be coming at it from a slightly different perspective from my own.
Another great example is Soul and Surf’s blog series, where they tell the story of how they set up their tropical surf and yoga holidays, again, something only a select group of people have experienced.
What can people only get from you?
Your blend of expertise and experience is one that only you have. Work out how you can use this blend to make your content distinct.
For instance, someone I know is one of many, many yoga teachers, but she’s also a physiotherapist, which provides an insight not all yoga teachers have.
The fitness tracker Jawbone are really good at doing this. They use the data only they have to create one-of-a-kind content about what habits lead to weight loss amongst Jawbone users, and even how sleep was disrupted during an earthquake.
Speak to your audience
Even if you create content that’s similar to stuff that’s already out there, find a way to speak directly to your specific audience. Make whatever topic you’re covering even more relevant to them so they’ll devour your version over something more generic.
Artifact Uprising are masters at this. Their blog includes topics that have been covered countless times before – the rule of thirds, Father’s day and displaying your photos – but they’re covering these topics in a way that’s beyond the obvious, and that has extra value to the Artifact Uprising fan (keen photographers and storytellers).
